You hear all the time that you should layer microfiber over hemp or bamboo in order to accommodate a super soaker - that the microfiber absorbs faster than the natural fibers and will soak it up right away, and then the natural fibers will slowly absorb what the microfiber can't hold.
Guess what?
That's wrong! Check out this video from the

Ohhh thanks for doing this experiment and posting it! I don't think I knew that was the reason, we switched to hemp. I thought the microfiber was leaking due to a heavy wetter, but this makes a lot of sense!
ReplyDeleteThat was a great comparison. I am glad someone is actually showing the difference.
ReplyDeletemaybe next you could a more in depth experiment to see which holds more by using inserts of the same size of each different material to see which holds more for the same size insert. Also, in this, were both brand new or just prewashed or washed several times? I've heard that hemp gets more absorbent with use but that microfiber is prone to build up after a lot of use.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I stopped using pocket diapers for months because of the leaking. Then I found bamboo inserts and they are incredible. Two bamboo inserts is about the same thickness as one microfiber, and I only have to use two overnight, one is fine for daytime.
ReplyDeleteBeen in the process of replacing some of my microfiber liners for this exact reason. Thanks for posting the video!
ReplyDeleteThis is so true! I ceased using wallet nappies for several weeks because of the dripping. Then I discovered bamboo bedding places and they are amazing. Two bamboo bedding places is about the same width as one micro-fiber, and I only have to use two over night, one is excellent for day time.
